Lynn Givens is our facilitator for this webinar. Lynn has been an outstanding teacher of struggling readers and a teacher educator for over 35 years. She served as Director of Intervention at the Florida Center for Reading Research where she was involved in providing intervention training and professional development for teachers throughout Florida. She taught undergraduate reading courses at FSU’s School of Teacher Education, teaching and facilitating a practicum for teachers of struggling readers, and acting as instructor/facilitator for online teacher endorsement courses in reading. Trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, she spent eight years at the Schenck School in Atlanta, which provided her with a firm foundation in teaching students with Dyslexia and other struggling readers. Her goal has always been to provide high-quality, explicit instruction to close the gaps for students who are having reading difficulties.
Grammar instruction is often thought of as a series of worksheets where students are asked to label parts of speech, add correct punctuation, etc. These activities may appear to have no connection to any other skills that students are learning in the classroom. However, by using a more structural approach to teaching grammar, teachers can help students learn to apply these skills to improve both their reading comprehension and overall written expression. For dyslexic students, making this connection is even more important, as these individuals learn most effectively when they are presented with a logical, meaningful approach.
In this webinar, we will discuss the various aspects of grammar: parts of speech, mechanics, sentence structure and usage. We will identify the critical elements to be learned and how these can be taught most effectively to dyslexic students. We will also explain how each of these aspects can be applied to foster improvement in both reading and writing, as students learn to expand, combine and deconstruct sentences using grammatical principles.
